Mergelweg to become fietsstraat

Gemeente Maastricht has decided to design Mergelweg more clearly as a cycle street and will implement changes.

The road has been a fietsstraat for three years now, however motor vehicles are also allowed to use it at particular times. To make the road between Maastricht's Sint Pieter district and Kanne in Belgium safer for cyclists and pedestrians, it will be relaid as a bicycle street from March 2020. Speedbumps will be laid to slow down cars, clearly separated asphalt strips for cyclists will be introduced and green strips must indicate the start and end of the fietsstraat. The plan to make the road more pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists is in line with the objectives of the municipal coalition agreement to promote sustainable forms of mobility.
